Q. What caused you to write this book?
As I sat in divorce court in preparation for my own divorce, I saw how inept and dangerous these old time judges could be. In the absence of specific, detailed facts of any kind) they can latch on to, they were incapable of rendering fair decisions. They wanted to clear their packed calendars so they made decisions based on the slimmest of fact presented by the loudest attorney. Both men and women go screwed! Women mostly because the man had control of the money to hire the best lawyers and the women, blind-sided by the husband's departure,  had to settle for what their meagre budgets could afford. Both my friend Barbara  and myself thought there should be something done to level the playing field and this book was born. We saw that so many women were unprepared for this battle.

Q. What makes you qualified?
I spent a good deal of time as a visitor in divorce courts, as a member of divorce groups and working with a large number of women (and men) to help them create the shift in their thinking and to develop a "Divorce Survival Plan." These people knew their marriage was headed for the rocks and they needed to be prepared when it hit bottom. From my experiences, I could see there was so much they needed to know and much I could do to help them be better prepared.

Q. What does your book cover?
This book deals with laying out the specifics and planning investigations, to uncover and obtain all the information and documents that relate to the family's assets and income. Bank and brokerage accounts, insurance policies, real estate, private businesses and other areas of family finance you would need to know about. In many cases, this information has been kept in secret by your husband and we show you what can be done and how to go about getting what you need before your husband should leave or die.

Q. I don't know about finances. Can this book help?
You may not help you understand the content and purpose of any of the documents we help you find because that's not the purpose of this book which is to show you how to go about finding out what there is to find. If you need some evaluation of any document in the future, your broker, banker, accountant  and lawyer can do that job for you. Just having them in your possession is a very useful and powerful position.

Q. What will my husband do when he finds me snooping?
I can't speak for all men, but if he has been hiding things from you, he might get upset that you've found him out. But then he might see that you're on to him and become more co-operative. He might be doing things his way out of habit and could be relieved that you are taking an interest in the family's finances and encourage you. Either way, you will be far better off than when you were in the dark even considering any upsets you'll have to face.

Fred, You're so right on the target. Yes, I had a feeling which I didn't ignore this time, that my husband was fooling around and getting ready to leave. I went to work fast and found out that he had two checking accounts and some cash stored at a broker's money market account. He also had a second car which he kept at his girlfriend's house.
